We have busy recently launching a sister site www.pilatesnearby.com, based on www.yoganearby.com as a way for people to easily locate a pilates class, workshop or holiday nearby!

Many of yoga teachers/studios teach or have involvement with pilates, so it’s a natural choice to extend the site to include pilates!

We hope to offer pilates students and teacher a valuable and easy to use service, and encourage people to take up yoga and/or pilates!

Users can now search based on not only town, city, zipcode or postcode, but also by street/road name.

For example, you can search yoga classes nearby to 100 Seventh Avenue New York or yoga workshops near Penywern Road, Earls Court, London

We hope this makes finding yoga nearby easier for people wishing to find local yoga classes, workshops or yoga holidays around the world.

Site updates

posted by yoganearby in Development 0 comments

We have been busy recently, making changes to the site. We hope to make it easier for people to find the exact location they are looking for by adding a worldwide / Continent / Town & City search, accessed via Yoga Worldwide. Remember if you cannot find your town, city, zipcode or postcode, just use the map, double click anywhere on the map to show you the nearest classes, workshops or holidays closest to that point.

Teachers have been adding their images & photos (remember, you can add as many images as you like), which adds an extra dimension to a teachers listing.

We plan to have a teachers page, which details all their classes, workshops and/or holidays, to give an overview of all the teachers details.

We will be introducing small changes to make using the site easier for both students and teachers alike.

We welcome all comments, and any queries or suggestions teachers and students may have, to help us improve the site!

We will inform you by email when a new message arrives.

We have put this in place, as we were receiving email responses direct to us, rather than the person who was making the enquiry.

Yoga & Earth Hour

posted by yoganearby in News 0 comments

You might have noticed something different about google.com this morning. Instead of it’s usual white background, the home page is all in black. earthhourlogo300x293.jpg

“Google users in the United States will notice today that we ‘turned the lights out’ on the Google.com homepage as a gesture to raise awareness of a worldwide energy conservation effort called Earth Hour. As to why we don’t do this permanently - it saves no energy; modern displays use the same amount of power regardless of what they display. However, you can do something to reduce the energy consumption of your home PC by joining the Climate Savers Computing Initiative.”

How does this all affect yoga? Well how about yoga by candle light?

“Several yoga studios are offering classes by candlelight. The Yoga Sanctuary’s Danforth location will hold a class with live music. The cost is $40, with 10 per cent of the proceeds going to Trees for the Future.

Big Stretch Yoga Centre on Bayview Ave. will hold a class by candlelight and donate the proceeds to WWF.

Fireflow Yoga at 172 Eglinton Ave. E. is planning a similar event. Various locations of Moksha Yoga have scheduled special classes.

‘The little things make a big difference,’ says Don Christensen, studio director of Moksha Yoga on Bloor St. W. It will host a class with live music. ‘There are cultures who are used to brownouts … we’ve just been kind of spoiled with 24/7 electricity. It’s really not a big deal at all to shut it off for one hour.’” Read more

Laughter & Yoga

“Laughter and yoga can be powerful medicine. Medical science has long known and accepted the therapeutic value oflaughter-yoga.jpg laughter. Human beings were made to laugh. Laughter is a stress reducer in humans that lifts the spirits, makes them feel good and improves their interactions with others. In the past, happy, healthy humans spent 20 minutes a day or more in laughter. Now, the adult daily laugh time is probably five minutes or less in many countries. A regular 20-minute laughter session can have a positively affect health and well being. Laughter is no only fun but is a gentle exercise. Laughter fills the lungs and body with oxygen, clears the breathing passages and exercises the lungs. This is really important for people who don’t get regular aerobic exercise. Laughing stimulates the body to release a cocktail of hormones and chemicals that have startling positive effects on the system. Stress is reduced, blood pressure drops, depression is lifted and the immune system is boosted.” Read more

Yoga at home

Practice yoga at home?

“When I first started Hatha Yoga, asana took place in the studio—exclusively, which was, honestly, plenty posture for me. I probably won’t feel comfortable practicing at home anyway without a teacher to guide me from posture to posture safely. I also think I wouldn’t know what to do. Class after class, year after year, though, poses and their individualized soundtracks (the echoes of tag-along verbal instructions) have filed themselves into my brain and body. Now, alone on my mat, I can still hear my teacher’s oral cues walking me through Trikonasana (triangle pose), Janu Sirsasana (head-to-knee pose) and, among others, Navasana (boat pose).  Her voice is easily recalled—which I mostly welcome, except on those more tired days when I can also hear her corrections of my lazy, shoulders-up-around-my-ears modifications.” Read moe

Bikram Choudhury has created a worldwide empire out of stretching, sweat and spines. His controversial Bikram yoga is a therapeutic, fixed sequence of 26 hatha yoga postures, practiced in a 105-degree room and designed to work every major muscle, joint and organ in the body, from ‘bones to skin’ — as his classic dialogue goes.” Read more
